Looks like Montreal's new mayor Valérie Plante didn't waste any time cancelling this season's scheduled season finale. Not that it's a surprise really, given her position on the controversial, but short lived, history of Formula E racing in Montreal. See: 'No Street Racing in Montreal'
Plante made the announcement during a press conference on Monday citing the escalating costs associated with hosting the race for this year and the following 2019 race. "This is where we draw the line" Plante said in reference to the expected 35-million dollar price tag for 2018 race alone. "at this point it doesn't pay off".
A spokesman for Formula E told Autosport.com "We are very surprised and disappointed by the unilateral decision and announcement of the Mayor of Montreal, This is a clear case of a new mayor undoing what the previous mayor [Dennis Coderre] did. "Whilst there is a contract in place, we will not make further comments at this point as this is now in the hands of our Canadian legal counsel."
So where does this leave Formula E?
Series CEO Alejandro Agag told Autosport in Hong Kong earlier this month that racing in another Canadian city was not out of the question, but with only seven months before the planned finale it leaves the series with little time to source and execute a replacement.
If an alternative event cannot be found, the 2017/18 season would end with the second New York double-header in Brooklyn on July 16-17.
Which works for us. we're planning to be at NYC this year..
